As of April 30th the LLC will have changed its LibSearch catalogue provided by EBSCOHost Discovery Services to WorldCat Discovery Services.
The search function will remain the same but there will be some changes to the features and overall look-and-feel. Read below for more details:
What is WorldCat Discovery Service?
WorldCat Discovery Service is a search tool that allows you to search for resources available in multiple formats at the Bow Valley College library and at libraries around the world.
Why is the LLC changing its discovery service catalogue?
In short, we are getting more for our money! As a member of The Alberta Library (TAL) with holdings listed in the provincial shared library catalogue, TALonline.ca, the LLC was given a basic subscription to WorldCat Discovery Service.
We chose to upgrade this subscription so users could access all our library holdings – print books, e-books, streaming videos, infobases, and databases with thousands of periodicals and monograph entries – from one search box on the same platform.
Will I still be able to view my Library Account to renew and place holds on books?
Yes, you can still access My Library Account from the LLC’s website to view your loans and due dates or place a hold on a book that's checked out so you're next in line to get it when it's returned.
Will I need to login?
You do not need to login on-campus. For remote, off-campus locations, a pop-up will appear with the notice “Authentication Required.” Click “Continue to View Results” in the pop-up to see your search results. When you click “Access Online” to open a resource, you will be prompted to login with your same LLC username and password.
When is this going to happen?
The launch date is Thursday, April 30th. During the summer months, the LLC’s library staff and librarian will be busy learning, tweaking, and improving the new LibSearch catalogue as we become more familiar with its capabilities. If you've got suggestions, make sure to share them with us!
I created an EBSCOHost user account to save search results and resources– will I still be able to access these?
Yes! Our subscriptions to multiple EBSCOHost databases have not changed, so you can access your user account from any of these databases.
Can I search just for books or journal articles in the new catalogue?
Yes! The new LibSearch catalogue offers various “facets” to refine search results by format (i.e. print book, journal article), location or database, and more.
When I search the current LibSearch catalogue, I like to narrow results with options in the left-hand column. Can I do this in the new catalogue?
Yes, the new LibSearch catalogue also allows you to apply a filter to results after you have done a search. On the left-hand side of the results screen you can limit by library, format, author, date, and language.
When I am doing a search, can I email or link to my results?
Each search result has a record with a drop down menu in the top right-hand corner with options to email search results or record the link.
